Introduction

It is important to remember that everybody has a different body shape. This may sound obvious but when selecting the right combination of ostomy pouch and supporting products it is important to consider an individualized solution – one size and type of pouch doesn’t fit all! A number of factors would have been considered by the WOC Nurse prior to suggesting the most suitable type of ostomy pouch for the patient. The Nurse would have assessed the whole patient, as well as the type and position of the ostomy. Body shapes are different and change over time – like a pair of glasses, an ostomy pouch will need reviewing at least annually to ensure they continue to be the right solution for the patient.

The consequence of a poor fitting ostomy pouch is leakage, which can lead to:

  • Sore skin
  • Higher use of pouches
  • Social isolation due to fear of leakage
